OMMC DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY

WINS THE ASIAN HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT AWARD

by Dr. Nolan O. Aludino

On October 7, 2004, the Department of Surgery of Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center (OMMC) bagged its first ever international award. OMMC received the Asian Hospital Management Award, which is given annually to recognize outstanding practices/projects in hospital management. It is an outstanding achievement for OMMC because we bested 55 other hospitals from different countries who were also vying for the accolade in Human Resource Development category. This is not the first time that a Philippine based hospital has won such an award. However, the previous Filipino recipients were private institutions who cater primarily to well-off patients.

The Knowledge Management System (KMS) of the Department of Surgery at OMMC has been recognized by AHMA, sponsored by the Asian Hospital Federation, International Hospital Federation and others. The KMS is a strategy to create a system of codifying, storing, sharing and transferring knowledge to achieve the department’s vision-mission and sustainable growth.

The Department Chairman, Dr. Reynaldo Joson, together with the chief resident of the department, Dr. Hazel Turingan, personally  received the award in Bangkok Thailand. The department chairman has been at the forefront of the development of KMS.
